In The Time Of Covid
In The Time Of Covid It may sound like a chore, and it will certainly take a substantial amount of work. But it's also a unique opportunity that can make a difference at decision time. Admissions committees put the most weight on your high school grades and your test scores . However, selective colleges receive applications from many worthy students with similar scores and gradesâ"too many to admit. So â" yes â" itâs fine to take a quick read to look for spelling errors, but itâs not fine to write your childâs essay for him or her. Schools that do require the essay feel that strong writing is a good indicator of college readiness and that more information allows them to better evaluate applicants. You will also have to learn to bulk up the content of each paragraph. I dislike giving rules or formulas to students when it comes to college writing because nearly every rule or formula has both weaknesses and exceptions. Nothing is worse than trying to match an application essay with no name (or, worse, an email address such as ) to a file. Make sure to keep copies of what you sent to which schools and whenâ"and follow up on them! Be certain the college or university you're applying to received your essay. You donât want all that hard work to go to waste. Now parents â" you all know the difference between fixing typographical errors and making massive substantive changes to your childâs essay, right? Remember â" the admissions officers read thousands of essays every admissions season, and they can spot an overly polished essay a mile away. After all, they must be among the most successful of this weird literary genre. Writing the college essay takes time and effort, and you should feel accomplished. When you submit your essay, remember to include your name, contact information, and ID number if your college provided one, especially if you send it to a general admission email account. Essays give admission officers real insight into the applicant. You might wonder how a huge school would manage reading thousands of essays, but you can trust that they hire extra staff, if necessary, to make sure the entire application gets a close look. The University of California is known for valuing as much information as students can fit into their applications, so itâs no surprise that the UCs havenât dropped the SAT essay requirement. Whereas many highly selective colleges and universities have done away with the essay requirement, the UCs have notably stood firm in their decision. But a general guideline for the paragraphs in your college essays is that they should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of a page. Any longer, and chances are good that you have more than one main idea. In which case, you need to find the other secondary main ideas and give them their own paragraphs. It is very easy for a rep to recognize an essay that has been coached someone other than the student. Unfortunately, too many cooks spoil the pot, so to speakâ¦and kids easily get confused when parents, English teachers, their counselor, and their friends all have different advice. Freshman Admissions
Freshman Admissions Living on the Notre Dame campus with other REU students, UND athletes, and other summer school students was a whole other experience that prepared me for the world beyond high school. By broadening her initial anecdote and having the majority of the essay focus on her reflections and takeaways, we were able to spend even more time learning about Callie. By the end of the summer, I wasnât ready to leave the research that I was doing. According to the Post, the tracking process begins as soon as a student first directs their browser to a school's website. Rachel decides to write about her local and global communities of Third Culture Kids. And, as I write these things down, I notice a theme of youth/old age emerging. Games have changed for me as Iâve gotten older. Share all your brainstorming content with them and ask them to mirror back to you what theyâre seeing. It can be helpful if they use using reflective language and ask lots of questions. But I won't give up on it because, I can still get infinitely close and that is amazing. Have at least one other person edit your essay. Don't reuse an answer to a similar question from another application. Anyone can write about how they won the big game or the summer they spent in Rome. When recalling these events, you need to give more than the play-by-play or itinerary. Describe what you learned from the experience and how it changed you. It could be an experience, a person, a bookâ"anything that has had an impact on your life. Note that I couldnât come up with something for the last one, âknowledge,â which is fine. This completely different perspective broadened my understanding of the surgical field and changed my initial perception of who and what a surgeon was. I not only want to help those who are ill and injured, but also to be entrusted with difficult decisions the occupation entails. Discovering that surgery is also a moral vocation beyond the generic application of a trained skill set encouraged me. I now understand surgeons to be much more complex practitioners of medicine, and I am certain that this is the field for me. from creating an awesome college list to preparing for the college interview. Each of the values creates an island of your personality and a paragraph for your essay. Never before had I seen anything this gruesomeâ"as even open surgery paled in comparison. Luckily, my family managed to drive me several hours away to an urban hospital, where I was treated. Yellow fever shouldnât be fatal, but in Africa it often is.
11 Tips To Writing Your College Admissions Essay In One Day
11 Tips To Writing Your College Admissions Essay In One Day Many students and parents begin the college prep process by comparing the ACT and SAT tests. The SAT and ACT generally cover the same topics. Both ACT and SAT scores are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships. Different students tend to do better on one test over the other. Your high school grades will be very important for your college application, particularly your junior year grades since these give colleges the best idea of what kind of student you are now. Things like this can happen in high school too, but it's more prevalent in middle school, which makes it harder for colleges to compare grades of students who went to different middle schools. The SAT essay is generally considered one of the least important aspects of a studentâs college application, so an average essay score isnât necessarily an automatic indication that you need to retake the test. The foremost focus should be on your composite score. The essay should be in the studentâs voice and parentâs are not always the best advisors for this part of the application. The college is learning about you from what you write. Not what anyone else writes including your parent. But, if they start writing the essay know that the college may very well determine that the work was not yours. There is nothing theoretically wrong with that person being a parent if they are skilled and sensitive to helping while allowing the studentâs own voice to remain dominant. Many times however, when a parent tries to help, they do more harm than good. It is very easy to spot an essay that has been overly edited by a parent and that is not good for the students chances of admission. However, they should not write or re-write the essay. Essayâs should always been seen by someone else to look for grammatical and spelling errors. Most colleges do not prefer one test over the other. Neither the SAT or ACT is harder than the other. But the main idea behind any essay is that it should reveal something of the writerâs (in this case, the studentâs) character and parents can easily hinder that process if they edit too much. You absolutely should have a second and even third set of eyes help you edit and proofread your essay. Many students do need help selecting a topic and organizing the essay. They should seek guidance from their counselors or teachers for this. And then they are pleasantly surprised when admissions officers write acceptance letters with personal notes about their childâs fabulous essays. Editing is a part of the writing process, like development and revision, where another person can be helpful. Be sure to pick readers who have strong skills in grammar and usage. If your parents fit the bill, thereâs no reason they shouldnât help you polish your essay, but students often find it easier to work with a teacher, counselor or other adult. Parents can become emotionally involved and/or try to influence the content of the essay, which is something you DONâT want. No matter who helps to edit and proof your work, itâs essential that your writing remain your own. Parents can help their child brainstorm topics, encourage them to write multiple drafts, and help him or her meet deadlines. Some parents should not even read their kidâs essays as they want to change too many elements that make the essays lose their unique adolescent voice. I know this is the touchiest of topics, but I always beg parents to believe in their child. Is your parent going to write your essays that are assigned by professors while you are in college? The college cares how you write not how your parent writes unless they are also applying to the same college as you.

It is also your opportunity to make a good final impression and to end on a positive note. Such a conclusion will help them see why all your analysis and information should matter to them after they put the paper down. So if you get a range from the institution like words, you need to write at least 400 words. If you write less, it will come across like you have nothing to say, which is not an impression you want to give. It's finals week and I have to finish my essay immediately. How To Write The Best College Admission Essay
How To Write The Best College Admission Essay Go out on a limb and take a stab at the question that helps you paint a unique and compelling self-portrait. And if your dream school presents you with some of the old standards, remember to approach the subject from the most unique angle you can. But your application essay isnât your life story in 650 words. Instead, pick one moment in time and focus on telling the story behind it. Take a minute and think about the college or university admission officers who will be reading your essay. How will your essay convey your background and what makes you unique? If you had the opportunity to stand in front of an admission committee to share a significant story or important information about yourself, what would you say? The college application essay is your chance to share your personality, goals, influences, challenges, triumphs, life experiences, or lessons learned. Not to mention why you're a good fit for the college or universityâ"and why it's a good fit for you. These are the stories behind the list of activities and leadership roles on your application. In college essays, you talk about your personality in detail and reflect on all the characteristics you possess. Take advantage of being able to share something with an audience who knows nothing about you and is excited to learn what you have to offer. One of the most common struggles students encounter is resisting the urge to squeeze everything theyâve seen, done, and heard into their essay.
College Essay Coach
College Essay Coach In other words, an outstanding essay may tip the scales. Some teens think their college essay, or âpersonal statement,â will determine their entire future, and others bristle and balk when asked to finally write it, believing it will never be read. Free writing, ideally done with pen and paper instead of on the computer, is an exercise in opening the creative mind and letting ideas flow. Knowing this, you will be more relaxed and inspired as you write. Your essay may be the ultimate product, but before you start worrying about the final edition youâll send off to colleges, take some time to work on the process. Free-writing will help you hone your skills and practice for the real thing. Whether youâre prompted to write about a formative experience, why you think youâd be a good fit for the university or about a person who has influenced you greatly, answer the question honestly. You should find out more about the college or university of your interest and write an essay specific to that audience. Getting started can be the hardest part of writing. There is information to share and college admissions officers like to read a good essay. However, once you get started, writing becomes easier. Follow these simple tips to get a strong start on your essay. Ask people to read your drafts to provide you corrections and advice on your essay. Your teachers, family, friends, school counselors, and community members are all people you might ask to help you create your essay. There are several tutoring services available across the nation; with a little research you should be able to locate an agency near you that may be able to assist you with writing. You should also feel free to use any assistive technology that you are using in school to help write your essay. See how the first relays information in apassivevoice, while the second paints anactivepicture? Feel free to start out by painting a vibrant picture of yourself too! Many college admissions counselors have said that the more unique your essay â" the content and writing style â" the more captivating it is to read. Over the years, students who tell me they absolutely love to write have said they struggle with the application essay. College essays can seem overwhelming, but you are sharing who you are as an individual. Use this module as an opportunity to develop your essay step by step. Always ask for help and stay focused on your topic. Remember that the college application is important, but not as important as your grades. Your essay may be your own ideas, words, and writing. Good writers always keep their audience in mind and a college essay is no exception. Colleges and universities have their own personalities and priorities. I know parents who believe kids who canât sit down and write essays themselves arenât ready for four-year college. Jager-Hyman said there are some who believe a 17-year-old need only âput one foot in front of the otherâ and apply himself to complete this task. But in reality, many otherwise-capable teens have no clue where to start. Students will be accepted âif the studentâs numbers fit the academic profile of the institution,â she says. Remember, your disability is part of who you are but not all of who you are. Do not fall into the trap of describing your disability in great detail. Do not write a textbook explanation of your disability. Disclosing your disability may be important, but explaining every aspect of it and how it affects your life might be more than what the college admissions expect from you. So if youâve been biting your nails or tearing your hair out even a little, youâre not alone. College admissions committees are looking to build a student body that will contribute to and sustain the community. They want to attract students and eventual alumni who are innovators and creators, and they want to have a hand in shaping those minds. When youâre responding to the âWhy Usâ prompt, youâre telling them exactly how an education there will shape your intellectual and professional journey. This essay isnât just about the college; itâs about you, too. Donât just write what you think the admissions office wants to hear. Very often they are inundated with essays that cater to âwhat they want to hear,â making such essays exactly what they donât want to hear.

Dreading Writing Your College Application Essay? Tips From The Pros
Dreading Writing Your College Application Essay? Tips From The Pros We havenât all pulled babies from burning buildings or sailed around the world in a catamaran. Tell a story from your own life that shows something unique about you. The story that your friends perk up to listen to- thatâs the stuff that makes for great app essays. More than anything, officers want to get to know you through your essay. If your study of AP biology conflicts with your religious views, write about that and how you reconciled the two. Donât be too formal â" or too reliant on a Thesaurus. After all, this component of the essay is all about your personality. Donât try to impress the admissions committee with your knowledge or verbiage; impress them with who you are. Donât write about circumstances and embellish just to have a sad or serious essay. Like great works of fiction, these essays clearly paint a picture in the readerâs mind. The main character is developed with depth and detail. Great essays are memorable because they distinctively portray their subjects without relying on clichés or formulaic topics. A great college essay combines creativity, excellent writing, and honesty. Itâs important that your essay be a solid reflection of you as a person and as a student, and that you follow the guidelines provided in terms of topic and word-count. It is well-written with college bound vocabulary and style, but easy to read and somewhat unassuming. Many students use this essay to expound upon activities or interests that are already heavily demonstrated in their application through courses, the activity list, and more. Instead of reinforcing a top activity or interest, instead, write about something that reveals another dimension of your life or personality. If your top activity is swimming, donât write about the big championship meet. Find something else that reveals something new and that shows you put a lot of thought into your essay. This is one of the most common mistakes that students make. In the pursuit to write the perfect essay, many forget to connect it to the original prompt. You will end up sounding like every other applicant. If you find yourself in this situation, youâre not alone. Writing a compelling essay is not an easy task given the high-stakes nature of college admissionâ"nor should it be. However, if you have had to struggle with an illness, loss of a loved one or other difficult experience, discuss how you have or are working to overcome it. If you need inspiration, check out this studentâs admissions essay. It got him into Harvard, MIT, Yale, Columbia and the University of Virginia. While the Common Application prompts for the main essay are general enough to allow students to write about whatever they choose, it still needs to be clear how that essay addresses the prompt. Check and double check that a clear connection is made between the topic or lesson of your essay, and the question the prompt is asking. The personal statement is your opportunity to reveal something about yourself that canât be found anywhere else in your application â" use it! In fact, few practiced writers are able to do it on demand. That said, if you can pull it offâ"if you can produce essays that complement your other credentialsâ"you will be able to introduce an effective âhookâ into your applications. Letâs take a look, then, at why colleges require essays in the first place. They convey on paper a sense of who the writer is as a person. After reading a great essay, I feel as if I have just had an enlivening conversation with the person even though it was entirely on paper.

How To Write
How To Write It doesnât have to be a vital part of a canon or curriculum to be a valuable choice. In fact, itâs better if youâre able to show that you explore art or literature outside the classroom. Further, donât just describe the object or plot points. Indeed, itâs imperative for you remember that, in the end, you must relate it back to you, your thoughts and your ideas. They simply want to know about your goals and dreams and what makes you tick. She has spent the past 20 years helping kids achieve their dreams & get into top tier colleges. At the end of your focused essay, be sure that what you have written directly responds to the request or question presented in the essay prompt you have selected. On July 15, Dickinson announced that the fall 2020 semester will be remote. Be careful â" applicants can easily go overboard with this question. Sure, ambition and creativity will help you craft a colorful answer. However, admissions officers arenât necessarily looking for something quirky or extraordinary . We learned that it was caused by a brain tumor that had been growing undetected for many years. Beth was flown home immediately for brain surgery. The Crimson's news and opinion teamsâ"including writers, editors, photographers, and designersâ"were not involved in the production of this article. She is deeply disappointed and saddened by her discovery. The only way to perform this last act is with great emotion. But, even though I knew this, I would not allow myself to go to a place where I could really feel Emilyâs pain and loss. A few months before I left for this theater program, my sister, Beth, who was living in Chile, suffered a seizure. I was Emily, I had a breakthrough, and that was my Act Three. At the end of this act, Emily, my character, dies but has the chance to relive a day with her family. She learns that the people around her did not really see what was important in life. Her idealized recollection of her life is shattered. Campus is closed to visitors who do not have an approved appointment. George wrote the essay himself, but he followed my advice. Hereâs what I told him, and what I tell everyone who asks me. Jay Heinrichs tells how to make admissions officers fall in love with you. Mimi and Michele have worked together for two decades to make admissions more transparent and less stressful. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essayâs flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. My sisterâs illness threw me off balance and changed my life forever. When, once again, I was thrown off balance, Act Three changed forever. In that moment, during rehearsal, my defenses fell and I was able to reconnect to the sadness I had felt. I discovered that I could go there again safely and grow from this experience. From that moment on, each rehearsal and each performance was done with great emotion. Steer clear of heaping ambiguous praise on a school or program; there is such a thing as being overly effusive. Instead, demonstrate that youâve done your research and that you have concrete reasons for wanting to attend. Highlight specific programs or opportunities that appeal to you and how a particular school will help you meet your goals. Colleges and universities donât expect you to write about a work that garnered a Pulitzer or sparked a new artistic movement (though itâs okay if you do).

How Long Should A College Essay Be?
How Long Should A College Essay Be? I now understand surgeons to be much more complex practitioners of medicine, and I am certain that this is the field for me. Never before had I seen anything this gruesomeâ"as even open surgery paled in comparison. Doctors in the operating room are calm, cool, and collected, making textbook incisions with machine-like, detached precision. It is a profession founded solely on skill and techniqueâ"or so I thought. This grisly experience exposed an entirely different side of this profession I hope to pursue. As with the Type A essay, complete the brainstorming exercises described at the start of this chapter. No matter which structure you choose, these exercises help. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it can be a powerful essay-outlining tool. Next, the author used the Narrative Structure to give shape to his essay. First, the author brainstormed the content of his essay using the Feelings and Needs Exercise. I not only want to help those who are ill and injured, but also to be entrusted with difficult decisions the occupation entails. Discovering that surgery is also a moral vocation beyond the generic application of a trained skill set encouraged me. And, as I write these things down, I notice a theme of youth/old age emerging. Note that I couldnât come up with something for the last one, âknowledge,â which is fine. Read her essay below, then Iâll share more about how you can find your own thematic thread. I am a diehard Duke basketball fan, and I can identify all of the Duke basketball fans at my high school on one hand. Iâve gotten different Myers-Briggs personality types every time I took the test. I became a pescatarian this year to avoid fried chicken, and I can honestly get a lifeâs worth of meat out of cod, salmon, tilapia, shrimp, you name it. The theme of your essay is the thread that connects your beads. Imagine that each different part of you is a bead and that a select few will show up in your essay. Theyâre not the kind of beads youâd find on a store-bought bracelet; theyâre more like the hand-painted beads on a bracelet your little brother made for you. I couldnât believe that such a solvable issue could be so severe at the timeâ"so I began to explore. This completely different perspective broadened my understanding of the surgical field and changed my initial perception of who and what a surgeon was. Luckily, my family managed to drive me several hours away to an urban hospital, where I was treated. Yellow fever shouldnât be fatal, but in Africa it often is. But I won't give up on it because, I can still get infinitely close and that is amazing. Don't reuse an answer to a similar question from another application. Anyone can write about how they won the big game or the summer they spent in Rome. When recalling these events, you need to give more than the play-by-play or itinerary. Describe what you learned from the experience and how it changed you. The hourglass of life incessantly trickles on and we are powerless to stop it. Every morning when I wake up, I want to be excited by the gift of a new day. I know I am being idealistic and young, and that my philosophy on life is comparable to a calculus limit; I will never reach it. Share all your brainstorming content with them and ask them to mirror back to you what theyâre seeing. It can be helpful if they use using reflective language and ask lots of questions. An example of a reflective observation is âIâm hearing that âbuildingâ has been pretty important in your life⦠is that right? â Youâre hunting together for a thematic thread--something that might connect different parts of your life and self. It could be an experience, a person, a bookâ"anything that has had an impact on your life. Each of the values creates an island of your personality and a paragraph for your essay.

College Essay Dos & Donts
College Essay Dos & Donâts Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. The host mom Shellie was a single mom who had two of her own sons and two Russian daughters that she had adopted. The kids always had something warm to eat, and were always on their best behavior at home and in school. In the living room were six or seven huge amplifiers and a gigantic chandelier hung from the high ceiling. At first, the non-stop visits from strangers made me nervous, but soon I got used to them. I remember one night, a couple barged into my room while I was sleeping. My second family was the Martinez family, who were friends of the Watkinsâs. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellieâs hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. We made pizza together, watched Shrek on their cozy couch together, and went fishing on Sunday together. On rainy days, Michael, Jen and I would sit on the porch and listen to the rain, talking about our dreams and thoughts. This essay could work for promptâs 1, 2, 5 and 7 for the Common App. To find out if your essay passes the Great College Essay Test like this one did, go here. After he leaves, I take out my notebook and begin writing where I left off. â my grandmother used to nag, pointing at me with a carrot stick. We realize this writer has been carefully constructing this piece all along; we see the underlying structure. Of course, those 28 months were too short to fully understand all five families, but I learned from and was shaped by each of them. I donât remember a single time that they argued about the games. The Dirksen family had three kids. They were all different. Danielle liked bitter black coffee, Christian liked energy drinks, and Becca liked sweet lemon tea. Dawn, the host mom didnât like winter, and Mark, the host dad, didnât like summer. After dinner, we would all play Wii Sports together. The host dad Michael was a high school English teacher and the host mom Jennifer (who had me call her âJenâ) taught elementary school. She had recently delivered a baby, so she was still in the hospital when I moved into their house. The Martinez family did almost everything together. Within two months I was calling them mom and dad. When he reveals each lesson at the end, one after the other, we sense how all these seemingly random events are connected. This essay could work for promptâs 1, 2 and 7 for the Common App. I had been typing an English essay when I heard my cat's loud meows and the flutter of wings. I had turned slightly at the noise and had found the barely breathing bird in front of me. But the best dimension that language brought to my life is interpersonal connection. When I speak with people in their native language, I find I can connect with them on a more intimate level. He would scoff at me when he would beat me in basketball, and when he brought home his painting of Bambi with the teacherâs sticker âAwesome! â on top, he would make several copies of it and showcase them on the refrigerator door. But I retreated to my desk where a pile of âPlease draw this again and bring it to me tomorrowâ papers lay, desperate for immediate treatment. Later, I even refused to attend the same elementary school and wouldnât even eat meals with him. For analysis of what makes this essay amazing, go here. Smiling, I open Jonâs Jansport backpack and neatly place this essay inside and a chocolate taffy with a note attached. I was the king of bowling, and Dawn was the queen of tennis. I donât remember a single time that they argued about the games.Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. It would be fair to say that this was all due to Shellieâs upbringing. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellieâs hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home.
40 Best Topics For Cause And Effect Essay
40 Best Topics For Cause And Effect Essay Sometimes even a single word that stands as a paragraph can make the reader wonder and read on. Put the reader in medias res, that is, in the middle of things. Place the reader in the middle of something happening or in the middle of a conversation. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. If there are a lot of mistakes in your essay, it can not be pretty. Make sure you have spelled everything correctly. Perhaps you can create a little mystery by not answering the prompt immediately. Maybe you could reveal that in the last sentence of your prompt after telling about all the little things that have some relevance to your area of study. For example, you might describe many natural flora, observe fauna, then list feelings you have about nature to lead up to writing that you want to study biology. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we donât want to deal with. In a world where we know very little about the nature of âTruth,â itâs very easyâ"and temptingâ"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chickenâs unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim down anyways. College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions. As much as you wish to shine, the shine will be lost if your sentences and thoughts do not string together logically. What if you were to take the negative approach to answer the prompt? Maybe you can tell what your hopes are by writing what you do not hope for. If you look at things a little differently from others you stand out. In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. On a desk in the left corner, a framed picture of an Asian family is beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. If you are on a date, you would naturally want to be smart, funny, nice, caring, unique, not boring. You also want to have an opinion, not step back like an unthinking geek. Write your essay as though you would be a great second date. That means you should write with voice, that is, you need to write with your own personality. Honesty, humor, talking the way you talk, showing the way you think, all help to create voice. If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to.
